History of Poker
Poker is one of the oldest games in the world. The name of the game seems to come from the French name Poque, that at the same time comes from the German term Pochen (to hit), but it’s still unclear if the games these names refer to were the predecessors of today’s poker. Poker has a great resemblance to the Persian game known as “As nas” and it’s possible that the Persian sailors taught it to the French colonists of New Orleans. It is believed that the game is related to the ancient game primero of the Reinassance and to the French game “Blean”.
The English game Brag, comes from the “Brelan” and it incorporated the bluffing. So it is possible that all these ancient games had an influence in the development of the poker just as we know it today.
The American actor Joseph Crowell described the game as it was played in New Orleans in 1829, played with 20 cards and four players would bet on the best hand of cards. It is believed that the game spread from New Orleans via the sailors of the Mississippi, where betting was very common.
There are several variations of poker nowadays such as:
- Texas hold ’em
- Omaha hold ’em
- Three card poker
- Stud poker
